Description

The border between Mexico and the United States has been at the heart of politics, art, and religion for centuries. This tour features the Rosenbach’s collections from Mexico and Texas, including materials from the Spanish Empire, the early years of Mexican independence, and relations with the expanding United States in the 1800s. The Spanish Empire, and later, Mexico relied on ink, paper, and the flow of information to rule over thousands of miles of territory and a complex web of people of various races and ethnicities. On this tour, you will meet Indigenous peoples, mestizos (people of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry), Europeans, and African peoples, both free and enslaved.

Learn more about the Rosenbach Museum and Library’s collection of rare books and manuscripts that document the history of colonial New Spain and early independent Mexico in episode 23 of The Rosenbach Podcast:  Episode 23 | Golden Cross: Relics of Imperial Spain and Independent Mexico at the Rosenbach. — The Rosenbach Museum & Library

This program is part of “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach.”

As the United States reckons with challenging civic divisions, the Rosenbach is doing its part to create opportunities to learn, grow, and heal together, as one people. “The People’s Friend: Civic Dialogues at the Rosenbach” invites members of our community to learn about history and build a bright future together.
